ABOUT Shanelle Abeywardene

Hello, I'm Shanelle! I'm originally from Minnesota and began my journey in psychology at Augsburg University in Minneapolis, where I earned my Bachelor's degree. I then completed a Master's in Forensic Psychology at The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, and I'm currently finishing my Clinical Forensic Psychology Psy.D. Along the way, I had the opportunity to work in Los Angeles, where I connected with individuals from a wide range of backgrounds. Now, I'm happy to be back in Minnesota and bring those meaningful experiences close to home. I have experience working with people of many different backgrounds, the LGBTQ+ community, various cultures, and in outpatient, intensive outpatient, and partial hospitalization settings. I am passionate about acknowledging the impact your background, culture, and upbringing can have on you as an adult, and how to move forward in a positive direction.

I am dedicated to meeting you where you are at and having a collaborative approach to help you meet your goals. I have worked with adults who have faced depression, anxiety, relationship conflicts, self-esteem issues, psychosis, and impactful life changes. Several modalities I often use are Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Positive Psychology, and various Psychodynamic influences. These frameworks help guide our work together in a thoughtful, compassionate, and collaborative way.

During my downtime, I enjoy baking, video games, Marvel/DC media, and spending time with my loved ones. Starting therapy is a courageous first step, and I appreciate you taking the time to learn more about me. Please feel free to reach out, as I would be honored to help you on your journey toward meaningful and positive change!
